Last updated October 15, 2004 Unbeaten Pioneers take Third Place in Pentiction Tournament Pioneers 3 (Dixon, Mason 2 (1 pen)) Classics 3 The Richmond Pioneers travelled to Penticton for the Annual Masters tournament, competing against 10 other teams in the Over 50 Division. Accumulating points for goals and shutouts were a factor for all participants hoping to advance, and the Pioneers turned in some good performances, narrowly missing out on a trip to the final, but winning the third place game on penalty kicks. The Pioneers opened strongly against a good Classics team, made up of players from the Lower Mainland. The Pioneers had a 3-1 lead until late in the game, the Classics tying it up on virtually the last kick of the game. The Pioneers did not make the same mistake in the second game against Prince George/Williams Lake, and were good value for their 3-1 victory. The Pioneers went into the Sunday game knowing a victory against Spokane would land them a slot in Monday's final. Despite dominating the game, the Pioneers failed to convert a myriad of great chances, and had to console themselves with a trip to the B Final. The Pioneers again were the better team in the B Final against Kamloops, but it took a late goal to send the game to penalty kicks. Kamloops converted only 2 of 5 kickswith Pioneers goalie Dave Valitas making a key savewhile the Pioneers scored on 3 of their 4 penalties to claim third place.
