Ben United tied the game up on the final kick of the game, when they were awarded a penalty when Eric Stepura was adjudged to have committed a slide tackle inside the penalty area. The call was vehemently disputed by the Pioneers. How you can do a slide tackle while staying on your feet was one issue the Pioneers had with the referee’s decision. The other was the fact that the indiscretion is supposed to result in an indirect free kick.
But the referee was adamant, and David Chan beat Dave Valitis on the ensuing penalty kick to end the game all tied at 2-2.
Despite the disputed call, the bottom line is the scoreline probably flattered the Pioneers, who were under a lot of pressure in the second half. Ben United deserved at least a tie from this game.
