Pioneers too strong for 'Oldergrove'

Richmond Pioneers 5 Aldergrove Two 1. Following last weeks 4-2 defeat by Aldergrove One, the Richmond Pioneers returned to their winning ways with a comfortable 5-1 home victory over Aldergrove Two, affectionately dubbed 'Oldergrove'.

The younger Pioneers, however, made it hard for themselves in the first half. Despite an overwhelming territorial advantage, the only goal of the opening stanza came at the 10 minute mark, when Graham Mason intercepted an errant Aldergrove pass, and quickly released the ball to a wide open Ken Johnston, who calmly placed his shot past the Aldergrove keeper.

After the break, the Pioneers worked harder to put the game beyond Aldergrove, and the breakthrough second goal came from Mason, a well placed left-footed strike from the edge of the penalty area.

Three more goals quickly followed, with Herb Lanz hitting a powerful shot from 20 yards to record his first goal since the first game of the season. Johnston would add his second of the game, picking up a cross from the right from Ben Fung. Fung himself would add the Pioneers fifth goal midway through the second half.

With the game now comfortably won, and with their opponents struggling to field 11 healthy bodies, the Pioneers shuffled the squad around, enabling Aldergrove to get into the game more. They were rewarded with a consolation goal with 10 minutes to go, ruining Dave Valitis' shutout.

Next game. A home game again at McMath. This weeks visitors are Tugs Classics, from North Vancouver.
